今回は英語で1番目や2番目のように、順番や順位を表す言葉を見ていきたいと思います
英語の勉強を始めたばかりの人は、身の回りの色々なものを表現する時に、何番目に〜〜な……と言った表現を英語でどう言えばいいのか困ったことが一度はあるのではないでしょうか
例えば「富士山は日本で1番高い山です」とか「体育祭のリレーで1番になった」のように、英語で何番目に大きい/高い/速いという時、one、two、threeとは違った数え方をします
すこし本題からは外れてしまいますが、このような順番や順位、番号を表す数字のことを序数といいます
序数（じょすう）
順位や順番を表す
ordinal numbers
first, second, third, fourth …
一方、リンゴが1つ、2つ、3つというようにものの数を数える場合、その数のことを基数といいます
基数（きすう）
ものの数や量を表す
cardinal numbers
one, two, three, four …

それではこれから順番を表す、序数について勉強していきます
ルール１．序数は、原則として基数の末尾に「th」を付けます
基本的なルールですが、順位や番号を言いたい時は、数字の末尾に「th」をつけます
6番目の場合「six」+「th」で「sixth」、10番目の場合「ten」+「th」で「tenth」といった感じです
例外１．1番目、2番目、3番目は、「first」「second」「third」といいます
ルール１をあっさりと無視していますが、皆さんご存じの通り1～3番目はoneth、twoth、threethではなく、first、second、thirdといいます
マリオカートをやってるとよく目にしますよね
一つ気を付けてほしいのですが、1の位が1～3の場合、つまり21番目や52番目の時も、同じようにtwenty-firstやfifty-secondのように表現します
例外２．基数の末尾が「e」で終わる場合、「ninth」のように「e」が省略されます
例外３．基数の末尾が「t」で終わる場合、「eighth」のように「t」がひとつ省略されます
例外４．基数の末尾が「ve」で終わる場合、「fifth」や「twelfth」のように「ve」が「f」に変わります
例外５．基数の末尾が「ty」で終わる場合、「twentieth」のように「ty」が「tie」に変わります
序数に関しては例外が多すぎて、「基数」＋「th」で常に正しく表現できる訳ではないので、最終的には根気強く暗記するしかないかもしれません
序数は日付でもよく使うので、31stまでは頑張って覚えてみてください
序数について一通り学んだところで、例文をみてみたいと思います
【例】Tone River is the second longest river in Japan after the Shinano.
利根川は信濃川に次いで、日本で2番目に長い川です。
【例】He is the third fastest runner in his class.
彼はクラスで3番目に走るのが速い。
【例】Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
富士山は日本で一番高い山です。
最後の例文は序数を使っていませんでしたね
一番という場合には、「the」+「形容詞の比較表現の最上級」で表現する方が多いかもしれません
